Effect of Four Different Meal Types on Postprandial Oxidative Stress : A Randomized Crossover Study with Healthy Subjects

چکیده
Diet is one factor influencing postprandial oxidative stress (POS). Previous trials mainly used ‘artificial meals’ to examine the effect of diet on POS, which could give results that are not representative of the real life postprandial situation. This study evaluated the acute effect of four distinct “real-life” meal types on POS. Thirty three healthy non-obese adults were randomized to receive one of the tested meals capturing distinct features of meals of Cantonese, Northern Chinese, South Indian and American in a series of four one-day studies. Fasting, two, four and six hours postprandial responses of biomarkers of oxidative stress, plasma glucose, lipids and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs CRP) were measured. Mean plasma allantoin concentration significantly increased for all meals at two-hours after ingestion, levels peaked at fourhours and declined by 6-hours post-ingestion, though baseline levels regained only with the Cantonese meal. The magnitude of postprandial increase in plasma allantoin concentration was smallest with the Cantonese meal and greatest with the American meal. There was less marked differences in postprandial changes in urine F2-isoprostanes (F2-IsoPs) across meals, but urine F2-IsoPs concentrations significantly increased for each meal during the six-hour postprandial period. There were differential meal effects on the postprandial changes in plasma glucose and triglyceride concentrations. Postprandial triglyceride levels significantly increased for all meals except for the Cantonese meal. Plasma hsCRP did not change with time or meal type. Our study demonstrates significant differential acute effects of four distinct meal types on POS in healthy adults. *Corresponding author: Ruth Chan, Address: Rm 124021, 10/F Lui Che Woo Clinical Sciences Building, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, Hong Kong, Tel: +852 2632 2190; E-mail: [email protected] Received Date: June 23, 2016 Accepted Date: August 01, 2016 Published Date: August 05, 2016

متن کاملDifferential Acute Postprandial Effects of Processed Meat and Isocaloric Vegan Meals on the Gastrointestinal Hormone Response in Subjects Suffering from Type 2 Diabetes and Healthy Controls: A Randomized Crossover Study
BACKGROUND The intake of meat, particularly processed meat, is a dietary risk factor for diabetes. Meat intake impairs insulin sensitivity and leads to increased oxidative stress. However, its effect on postprandial gastrointestinal hormone (GIH) secretion is unclear. We aimed to investigate the acute effects of two standardized isocaloric meals: a processed hamburger meat meal rich in protein ...
متن کاملA single consumption of curry improved postprandial endothelial function in healthy male subjects: a randomized, controlled crossover trial
BACKGROUND Curry, one of the most popular foods in Japan, contains spices that are rich in potentially antioxidative compounds, such as curcumin and eugenol. Oxidative stress is thought to impair endothelial function associated with atherosclerosis, a leading cause of cardiovascular events. The aim of this study was to determine whether a single consumption of curry meal would improve endotheli...
متن کاملEffect of low glycemic index food and postprandial exercise on blood glucose level, oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity
Low glycemic index (GI) food and postprandial exercise are non-drug therapies for improving postprandial hyperglycemia. The present randomized, crossover study investigated the effect of low GI food combined with postprandial exercise on postprandial blood glucose level, oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity. A total of 13 healthy subjects were each used in four experiments: i) rice only (c...
متن کاملEffect of cinnamon on gastric emptying, arterial stiffness, postprandial lipemia, glycemia, and appetite responses to high-fat breakfast
BACKGROUND Cinnamon has been shown to delay gastric emptying of a high-carbohydrate meal and reduce postprandial glycemia in healthy adults. However, it is dietary fat which is implicated in the etiology and is associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We aimed to determine the effect of 3 g cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) on GE, postprandial lipemic and glycemic res...
